Fantasy 5 Winning Ticket Bought In Bonita Springs- Are They Cursed?

You may be ecstatic to pick the winning numbers in the lottery and think your life is set.  But what if you had to share the prize with 3 other people, pay federal taxes on the winnings, and then possibly deal with people looking to take money from you.  Sounds like a curse to me.  Add in the fact that an estimated 70% of lottery winners blow all their money within a few years.

Well, a person just bought a winning Fantasy 5 game ticket at the 7-Eleven in Bonita Springs (the other 3 tickets were sold in Miami).  The winning numbers on Monday night were 01-25-27-29-30, and each winner gets $48,509.96 (before tax withholding).

While $48,509.96 is nothing to sneeze at, it is certainly not going to take care of anyone for the rest of their life.  With odds of 1 out of 376,992 to pick the winning numbers, I would have hoped for more than that considering the federal taxes on the money could be anywhere from 15% to 25% depending if they are single or married, and assuming this is their only income.  I guess some money is better than no money, but if friends/family find out about them winning, they can expect a whole host of problems that might not be worth the hassle.

Allen and Violet Large of Nova Scotia knew of the problems with winning large sums of money and literally gave away the $11.3 million they won in Canada.  Here’s the story in USA Today: Read here.

I found another article on 8 lottery winners who lost their millions: Read here.

What would you suggest to the winner in Bonita Springs?

They should buy something nice for themselves, their family and then try to put a little away. 50k can help a lot of people out in a lot of situations!

Well, it depends. I would put it into fun add-ons for my cars and boat (that I and my family enjoy using). Then again, we are in good shape.

I would suggest they do what they want with the money, assuming that their bills are paid and that they are in a good financial status. If they aren’t, I would be smart with my priorities and make sure to take care of the things that NEED to be taken care of first, before spending money on the WANTS.

Thanks for the comments. If I were in debt, I would first pay that down. If I were not in debt, I might invest some of the money to generate more income. Maybe into a nice domain name that is already generating income. Maybe into a nice dividend paying stock from a quality company. Interest rates at the banks are just too low right now for me to put it there.
